Telling Lives

It has been an exciting year for digital storytelling. A series of films made for the BBCs Taking Care week by young people who had just left care were featured on BBC1 in February. They were watched by millions of viewers and made the Top Ten factual programmes in the weekly survey of audiences made by Broadcast magazine.
Another set of films about family history appeared on BBC Interactive TV (Red button if you have digital TV) for Who Do You Think You Are?.
The first Digital Storytelling Centre has been opened in Blackburn and a similar radio storytelling project has begun in several radio stations in England. Despite the success the future is uncertain - especially with the recent cuts announced by Mark Thompson, the new Director General.
