Thea Gilmore – UK – Acoustic / Indie / Rock – www.myspace.com/theagilmore

I thoroughly enjoyed the Thea Gilmore gig at The Duchess in York last night. The performance was simple and sincere. I’ve listened to her music for years and have most of her albums but she was even better live.
The Duchess is an intimate venue and the audience was surprisingly small – even for a cold Sunday evening in York. But Thea’s performance was warm and engaging, supported by her producer and husband Nigel Stonier and Fluff (viola, vocals and guitar).
As long as Thea performs, the spirit of Joan Baez and the folk tradition of social comment and protest will live on.

Blueberries ‘reverse memory loss’

Scientists claim blueberries activate learning and memory in the brain.

Eating blueberries can reverse memory loss and may have implications in the treatment of diseases like Alzheimer’s, University of Reading scientists claim.

I am already a regular consumer of fresh fruit but if blueberries can revive my brain’s memory banks then I must add to to the weekly shopping list. I hope I remember  …….

Illuminating York

It was almost the last chance to watch this show. Apparently it had been on all week in York’s Museum Gardens and I knew nothing about until I tuned in to Elly Fiorentini’s excellent Drivetime show on BBC Radio York.

The Illumintating York show is two site specific animated films projected onto the walls of The Yorkshire Museum and the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey. The effect is spectacular. The accompanying soundtracks are a mixture of narrative, music, ambience and aural collage. The clip above gives a glimpse of the event but if you can be there tonight (Sunday Nov 2nd) it plays out for the final time between 5 and 11pm.

Sadly it was also the last chance to hear Elly on Drive. The Radio York schedule changes on Monday and she’s doing a key “behind the scenes” job for a while. Thanks for making me laugh Elly (and for keeping me up to date and informed).

Wes and I took part in this photography treasure hunt in London last weekend. We had fun, took lots of pictures and won a prize. See if you can spot our pictures among the many.
