BBC – North Yorkshire – Sony Award Nomination

Bedtime StoriesBBC – North Yorkshire – Entertainment – The Best Bedtime Book

Last year, BBC Radio York ran a Bedtime Stories Writing Competition. The standard of the entries was so high, we’ve created a book out of the top eight, which we’re selling to raise money for Children in Need. Here’s how you can get hold of one.

My old radio station has been nominated for a Sony Radio Academy Award for their Bedtime Stories in the Multiplatform section.

Congratulations to the team, and all the best on the awards nights in the glittering setting of the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

I think the highlight of my BBC career was standing on the stage there to receive the Sony Gold Award in the Community section for our service during the Floods of 2000.

York Theatre Royal and Riding Lights Theatre Company present Jerome k. Jerome’s

Ever been on a disastrous summer holiday? Three Men in a Boat will make yours seem like a honeymoon picnic. Jerome’s classic comedy comes roaring to life in a delightfully accident-packed evening as three men take a boat trip up the Thames in 1889. Through a series of hilarious mishaps and ineptitudes, a healthy rest-cure on the river goes badly adrift.

If you want a good night out then book a ticket for this production. You won’t be disappointed. Riding Lights is a local professional theatre company with 30 years of experience. Last year they toured the country with African Snow after a successful opening at York’s Theatre Royal. This is an altogether different kind of show but directed by Paul Burbridge to the same high standards.

Radio 4 news hit by giggling fit

BBC NEWS | Radio 4 news hit by giggling fit

Hundreds of listeners have contacted BBC Radio 4 after newsreader Charlotte Green dissolved into giggles while reading a bulletin on Today. She lost control after playing a clip of the oldest known recording of the human voice.

Charlotte Green has my sympathy – as someone who used to read news bulletins I know the dreadful feeling when a fit of the giggles interrupts your normally sedate reading voice.

The one that I recall most vividly was when I was reading a piece of copy, “North Yorkshire dinner ladies were toasted for winning an employment tribunal case over equal pay”. My imagination played riot with the idea of toasted dinner ladies.

Review: The Other Boleyn Girl

I was very disappointed with this film. Had I been on my own I would have left the cinema part way through I was so disengaged.
No effort was made to create the characters – I felt nothing for any of them. As the film progressed I didn’t care what happened to any of them. Bad things happened to them all – there was no redemption.
The story is about how Ann Boleyn became the second of Henry VIII’s wives. I know it was a bleak era in England’s history – but in this film it was boring too.
Thankfully it was a cheap seats night – so it only cost me £3.50 – and it was cold too.
Perfectly miss-able.
