RAF Linton on Ouse

RAF Linton

This is where RAF pilots are trained. If you squint you may just see a line of Turcano aircraft – and one that had just landed and taxiing towards the hanger.
Pilots from all over the world are trained here – some no doubt to be engaged in serious conflict when they return home.
Back to the theme of the day.
To change the subject – the new saddle is clearly visible in this picture – and it’s still comfortable. The route home is easy from here. The wind’s at my back, I’m following the River Ouse into York so it’s flat.

Fisherman’s Lodge Cafe

I’d have ridden straight past this place in Thorpe Underwood had it not been for Warren, a cyclist from Harrogate working on the reconstruction of the road.
This cafe overlooks a pond and to be honest it was very quiet, due largely to the state of the road. It’s closed from the B6265 for major rebuilding.
I managed to navigate a route over the rough surface and Warren kindly pointed out The Fisherman’s Lodge.
I had to stop, didn’t I.
Toasted Tea Loaf and a mug of tea. Enough to top me up for the rest of the ride back to York.

Cattal Station

This station is testament to the value of rural rail links. It’s on the line that connects York and Harrogate. It’s well looked after and well used.
Not far from here is the memory of a previous fundraising event. When I worked for BBC Radio York we put a team in the Knaresborough Bed Race. The “bed” belonged to someone in Cattal and we did our training around here. Training is exaggerating the effort that went in.
On the day we came last – the bed sank in the River Nidd. Jamie, the station engineer and I retrieved it from the river bed while the rest scrambled for the bank.
I’m sure this ride will end in greater success – possibly because it isn’t a race and it’s success is measured in how much money people like you donate to the cause.

Marston Moor

Conflict must be the theme of today. Here I am at the site of the
Battle of Marston Moor. In 1644 Oliver Cromwell won a decisive victory
here in his campaign against the Royalists.
Another civil war like so many today. Freedom fighters often robbing
people of their freedom, but equally at other times it’s part of the
struggle for freedom when negotiation breaks down.
Enough contemplation. Time to mount the pedals for a few more miles.

Stretching break

On the outskirts of York at Foxwood these poppies remind me of all
those who’ve fallen in war. As I stretch my tight muscles I think
about the uneasy conflict that grinds on in Israel between the
Isreali’s and the Palestinians.

I’m training for this ride to help a
few of the Christian Palestinians to tell their story more
effectively. If they can be heard without resorting to force the
resolution of the conflict comes closer.
You can sponsor my ride at www.help.co.uk/ridingbike. The funds I
raise will go towards the cost of travel for six Palestinians to
attend the Riding Lights Summer School in Harrogate this summer.
